Mathematics, Nature, and AI
We all hear that mathematics is good at describing nature, from the motion of waves in the ocean to the dynamics of stars in the universe. But just how good is it? Is mathematics just a convenient language for nature, or does it possess surprising and uncanny predictive powers? This is an age-old question, which we seek to revisit from a modern perspective, with examples ranging from subatomic particles to black holes. In the modern age, mathematics is also at the core of rapid developments in machine learning and artificial intelligence This raises another intriguing question: will AI be able to use mathematics to understand the universe even better than humans?
